Day 2: Exploring Rabat

.

Your day in Rabat promises an unforgettable journey through Morocco’s capital, steeped in history, culture, and breathtaking scenery. With a perfect blend of ancient landmarks and serene landscapes, Rabat offers a captivating experience for every traveler.

Start your morning with a visit to the iconic Kasbah of the Udayas (Kasbah des Oudaias), a UNESCO World Heritage Site that exudes timeless charm. As you stroll through its narrow, white-and-blue-painted alleyways, you’ll feel transported to another era. The Andalusian Gardens within the kasbah provide a peaceful retreat where you can take a leisurely walk or simply relax amidst fragrant flowers and lush greenery. Don’t forget to pause at the fortress walls to soak in the stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean—a picture-perfect start to your day.

Next, head to the majestic Hassan Tower (Tour Hassan), one of Rabat’s most iconic landmarks. This 12th-century minaret, although unfinished, stands as a symbol of the city’s rich heritage. The surrounding esplanade, adorned with rows of ancient columns, adds to the site’s grandeur. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of the city and the Bou Regreg River.

Just a short walk away lies the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, an architectural masterpiece that seamlessly blends traditional Moroccan craftsmanship with modern elegance. The intricately decorated interior, with its zellige tiles and carved cedarwood, is awe-inspiring. As the final resting place of King Mohammed V and his sons, the mausoleum holds significant historical importance and offers a tranquil atmosphere for reflection.

For a deeper dive into Rabat’s layered history, visit Chellah, an ancient Roman city turned medieval necropolis. Wander through the ruins of Roman baths, markets, and temples, all enveloped by the charm of overgrown gardens and the soft chirping of storks that nest in the area. This hidden gem provides a serene escape and a fascinating glimpse into Morocco’s past.

By midday, enjoy a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, savoring traditional Moroccan dishes like tagine, couscous, or freshly caught seafood. Rabat’s culinary scene offers a feast for the senses, ensuring you’re energized for the rest of your exploration.

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Rabat’s Medina. Unlike other Moroccan medinas, this one feels refreshingly calm, making it perfect for a relaxed shopping experience. Browse through the souks for handmade rugs, artisanal pottery, and unique souvenirs, or simply enjoy the medina’s colorful streets and lively ambiance.

Wrap up your day with a leisurely walk along the Bou Regreg Marina, where the river meets the ocean. This modern waterfront area is dotted with cafes and offers stunning views of the kasbah and neighboring Salé. As the sun sets, the golden hues reflect off the water, creating a magical end to your day in Rabat.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a culture lover, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Rabat has something special for everyone. This full-day itinerary ensures you’ll leave the city with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for Morocco’s vibrant heritage.

After a delightful breakfast in Rabat, your journey with Morocco Travel begins as you head towards the historic city of Fes. Along the way, you will explore two essential stops: Volubilis and Meknes, each offering unique insights into Morocco’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Your first stop is Volubilis, an ancient Roman city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. As you wander through the remarkably well-preserved ruins, you’ll discover the remnants of temples, basilicas, triumphal arches, and Roman houses adorned with intricate mosaics. Volubilis is one of the most impressive Roman archaeological sites in North Africa, providing a captivating glimpse into the region’s ancient past and its ties to the Roman Empire.

Next, you’ll continue to Meknes, a city steeped in history and grandeur. Begin your exploration at Bab Mansour, a magnificent gate that serves as one of the primary entrances to the old city. This stunning example of Moroccan architecture is adorned with intricate tilework and calligraphy, leaving visitors in awe of its beauty.

Nearby, you’ll find Lahdim Square, a lively hub surrounded by cafes, shops, and the vibrant main market (souk). Here, you can immerse yourself in local culture, enjoy the bustling atmosphere, and shop for Moroccan handicrafts, spices, and other treasures.

A visit to Heri es-Souani, also known as the Granaries of Moulay Ismail, will reveal the engineering marvels of the past. These massive underground grain stores and stables showcase the ambitious projects undertaken by Sultan Moulay Ismail to solidify his legacy.

The Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is another highlight of Meknes. As the final resting place of the powerful sultan, the mausoleum’s interior is exquisitely decorated, offering a serene and sacred space for reflection.

As the day draws to a close, you’ll arrive in Fes, the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco, where you’ll spend the night. This journey from Rabat to Fes, via Volubilis and Meknes, weaves together a rich tapestry of historical and cultural experiences, making it a day to remember.

Morocco Travel

It all began with a dream brighter than the Moroccan sun. Morocco Travel was born from a deep, burning passion to share the authentic spirit of my homeland with the world. As a Cultural Studies student, I saw each alley and desert expanse as a story waiting to be told.

Teaming up with Ali and Omar, our goal wasn’t to create a business empire; we simply wanted to spread happiness, ignite passion, and have heartfelt conversations about the cultural treasures of Morocco. From that modest aspiration, our venture blossomed unexpectedly, growing into the most renowned travel company in Morocco. The success was as surprising as it was gratifying, a true testament to the joy and love we shared with every traveler.
