Its intricate tilework and calligraphy make it a true masterpiece, leaving travelers in awe of its beauty.

Fes, often dubbed the cultural and spiritual heart of Morocco, captivates with its ancient architecture and artisan traditions.
Start your morning at the Merenid Tombs, perched on a hill overlooking the city. Dating to the 14th century, these tombs offer sweeping panoramas of Fes’s sprawling medina and a majestic glimpse into the city’s storied past.
Descend into the bustling heart of Fes to visit a Ceramic/Poterie workshop, where master artisans—whose skills are often passed down through generations—invite you behind the scenes. This isn’t a showroom. You’ll witness the raw creation process: clay spun into elegant forms, intricate zellij tiles painted with painstaking precision, and ovens that bring tradition to life. Few travelers are ever allowed into this sacred space of craft.
For a deeper hands-on experience, seek out a weaving workshop nearby. Local artisans will guide you through the process of creating vibrant textiles on traditional looms—an opportunity to connect with Fes’s enduring creative spirit.
Continue to the Royal Palace (Dar el Makhzen), famed for its golden doors and elaborate zellij tilework. Though entry is restricted, the regal façade provides a dazzling photo stop.
A short walk away stands Bab Bou Jeloud, also called the Blue Gate. This iconic gateway leads into Fes el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed old city filled with narrow alleys and centuries-old structures.
Venture further to see the revered Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University and the splendid Bou Inania Madrasa, both exemplars of Islamic architecture.
Finally, visit the Chouara Tannery to see firsthand the heart of leather production itself. From above, you’ll witness a sea of stone vats filled with natural dyes—saffron yellow, pomegranate red, indigo blue—while below, tanners stand ankle-deep in the ancient process of transforming raw hides into world-renowned Moroccan leather. The scent, the color, the texture—this is Fes at its most honest and powerful.
After breakfast, you depart Fes for Marrakech via the modern highway, offering a smooth and comfortable drive through the heart of Morocco’s diverse landscapes. As the road unfolds, you’ll pass through a tapestry of agricultural plains, olive groves, and small rural towns that give a glimpse into everyday Moroccan life.
